The iconic Wells Fargo stagecoach team and driver ride across the range. The stagecoach will visit in conjunction with the Santa Ynez Historical Museum’s “Spirit of the West” Carriage Symposium that runs April 10 through 13.
Ever wondered what it would be like to ride the wide open range in one of those stunning Wells Fargo stagecoaches hitched to a team of galloping horses like in the old Westerns? If so, that chance to experience a “ride of a lifetime” will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, on the historic Chamberlin Ranch.
As part of the Santa Ynez Historical Museum’s “Spirit of the West” Carriage Symposium that runs April 10 through 13, the iconic Wells Fargo stagecoach, along with other stagecoaches and carriages will be offering rides through the lush green, oak-studded pastures of the Chamberlin Ranch.
Historical Museum representatives said that the Valley is very fortunate to have the Wells Fargo stagecoach team, and driver George Lane of the Lane Ranch in Lancaster, participate in the symposium carriage ride event.
The Wells Fargo stage is usually not available to small community gatherings but Wells Fargo management is strongly supportive of the Historical Museum’s effort to keep the history of stage coaching alive that it has made an exception for this particular event, museum officials added.
Stagecoach rides are available for $25. Children under 10 years old will not be allowed to ride for safety reasons. Tickets are available on the day of the event out at the Ranch and in advance by calling the SYV Historical Museum at 688-7889 or going on line to www.santaynezmuseum.org.
The Santa Ynez Valley Elks will be serving up barbecue tri-tip sandwiches, chips and a drink for $10 at the event as well.
In addition to the stagecoach rides, the museum is offering a docent-led bus tour that will trace the historic stagecoach route from the Valley to Santa Barbara.
Attendees will enjoy a private tour of the impressive Santa Barbara Carriage & Western Art Museum. On the return trip from Santa Barbara the bus will stop for lunch and a presentation at historic Cold Spring Tavern.
The bus tour, scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, is open to the public for $50 (includes chartered bus transportation, museum tour in Santa Barbara and lunch). Advance reservations must be made for the bus tour by April 8.
The public is also invited to a Western dinner and dance to be held on Friday evening, April 12, at the SYV Historical Museum. Dinner of New York strip steak and grilled chicken will be available for $40 for museum members and $45 for general public.
Proceeds from the success of the bus tour and stagecoach rides will go toward upgrades in the Museum’s Parks-Janeway Carriage House. The Parks-Janeway Carriage House, known as the finest of its kind west of the Rockies, displays more than 35 unique carriages, wagons, carts, stagecoaches and other modes of early transportation, as well as saddles, harness, and tack.
